I recall listening to James Taylor song on a film back in the 80's and fell in love with his music. When my dad died I listened to it constantly, it brought me real comfort as I sat in our spare room painting. I always turn to art in difficult times.
It came back to me again when I was pregnant with my son, and I would sing Sweet Baby James to him, as I drove to work, and I continued to sing it to him when he was born. The strong connection I have to this song has the power to instantly transport me back in time.
When the idea of a background of deep blues and greens came to me, I had the lyrics to Sweet Baby James going around in my head as a welcome constant companion...it has the wonderful line "deep greens and blues are the colours I choose, won't you let me go down in my dreams, and rockabye sweet baby James".
I was thinking of a deep water dreamscape when I created the background for this piece, a deep abyss with plant life and tendrils swaying, and life moving around in the secret places.
Mixed media techniques were used to create layers of texture and depth, and I spent countless days drawing the lace like white work using a dip pen and ink. I don't have a design in mind when I start to draw, I work intuitively and am guided by the colours and the marks on the canvas. Here I was inspired by the idea of the organisms and life that might be living in such a magical place.
The artwork has a white wooden frame surround, and is ready to hang.
